So far, we have collected about $60 which have been designated for school supplies for Catherine Flon Academy in Port-au-Prince. We have planned a kick-off event for our efforts here in Chicago for May 22nd and are heavily engaged in invites and publicity for this event. Featured performers include Ajani Olufemi, Tyevon so far!
This is event will be action packed! Haitian food tasting and Haitian music will set the tone. We will have a couple of discussions about how our brothers and sisters struggles in Haiti have added to the overall African Unity Landscape. In essence, why is Haiti so important or relevant for all-African people? Live performances and some folks will be interviewed for a live radio broadcast!
We are still open to collaborations and have reached out to a school on the East Coast--so that we can share our format-which is great, build synergy, and compound all of our efforts.
Oh yeah, the youth have engaged the community directly to educate about how their donations are truly used when given to third party agencies and foundations, like the Red Cross. To date, the Red Cross has collected around $500 million dollars specifically for Haiti Rescue and Recovery Efforts. Those funds should have been used immediately and yet 4 months after the January 12th earthquake, the Red Cross has only accounted for a little over $100 million dollars spent in Haiti!!! Just to think, according to TransAfrica 90% of all African (or Black) households in the United States gave funds for Haiti Rescue and Recovery. And Ghana in West Africa has also been a large donor to the Haitian plight. This is what you will never hear in mainstream media--which brings us closer to why the Youth in Action! work is so relevant. Youth in Action has placed itself in a position to gather information and share it with you, be it on the street, social networks, and other forms of media. Hmm, something else you won't hear about Chicago Youth in the mainstream media...Stay tuned.
